She’s best known for her ‘Little Tales’ but was also a well respected mycologist, renown for her watercolours of fungi. Originally written as illustrated story letters for the children of her friend, and former governess, Beatrix Potter’s stories were made all the more special by her watercolour illustrations and the immersive world she created. These celebrate four more of the author’s ‘Little Tales’ characters, including this coloured, silver proof coin which features a recognisable image of Peter Rabbit hopping away on adventures and getting into trouble with the legend ‘THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT’. With the great popularity of Emma Noble’s first series of Beatrix Potter commemorative designs in 2016, another set of four Fifty Pence pieces were released by The Royal Mint in 2017.
